This "Old Lady" Color Combo Is Getting the It Girl Treatment This Winter

Key Takeaways

  • This winter, red and purple is the trending color combo we didn't see coming.

  • The clashing shades look as home on Instagram baddies as they do on the heads of Red Hat Society members.

They say to dress for the job you want, and for me that job is future member of the Red Hat Society. Founded in 1998, the organization's mission is to "encourage women in their quest to get the most out of life." They call themselves a playgroup, and from what I see (currently outside the club), that means hanging out with and meeting fun women, going shopping, and wearing lots of red and purple.

Junior members under 50 years old are allowed in the group, but their colors are lavender and pink... not true red and purple. I hate to say it, but they're just not as good! That's why we're adopting the society's real regalia. And their values, too.

This winter, red and purple is the trending color combo we really didn't see coming. Pink and brown made sense, given the Y2K mania going on. The same goes for brown and blue! But purple and red? It seems to clash... until you see it as a tight and mini skirt combo.

The Trend

Burgundy is always a winter favorite. But what do you get when you separate the tones of the deep berry shade? Red and purple! Red is hot and bold (a little devilish, if you will) while purple is serene and flattering, the color of royals and the crown chakra. Together, you get a clashing combo that looks effortlessly cool.

Where You've Seen It

Purple and red have been popping up all over our Instagram feeds this year. We saw it at BravoCon, modeled by the likes of Ava Dash (of course the Next Gen NYC stars are going to be on top of the trends) and at fashion weeks worldwide. Glossier's holiday collection packaging is covered with the color combo, which makes sense considering their You Fleur brand identity.

It also has big Freakier Friday energy. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis wore the combo (Lohan in purple and Curtis in red) at the movie's UK premiere, and obviously looked best when they were standing next to each other.

Then, there's the trending Fanci Club bustier corset, which we've seen modeled by the likes of Dua Lipa, Olandria Carthen, and Rachel Sennott. It's red, it's purple, and it's extremely funky.
